Finding Our Place in the Inland Northwest – Being Not White in North Idaho

Nov. 10 – Being Not White in North Idaho at Human Rights Education Institute. The racial make-up of the population of North Idaho cities ranges from 92% to 98% White. Kootenai County’s racial make-up is 94% White, 0.5% Black, and 4.5% other races. This racial make-up of the region has intensified with the rapid growth in the region, even while racial diversity in the rest of Idaho has increased. How does this impact the living experience of those who are not White, who are living and working here? How does this affect the mindset of people living in the region and of people visiting and learning about the region? What has shaped people’s choices and decisions about living here? How have ideas about race shaped migration to and from this region?
